Silk Fabric
Silk fabric is a natural textile woven from continuous filaments secreted by the Bombyx mori silkworm. Each filament, 10-13 µm in diameter, contains fibroin protein encased in sericin gum; after degumming and reeling, 3-8 filaments are twisted into a single yarn yielding remarkable strength-to-weight ratio. The triangular cross-section of silk fibers refracts incident light, producing the characteristic lustrous sheen prized for millennia. Silk material accepts dyes with exceptional brilliance, drapes fluidly, and offers inherent temperature regulation-cool in summer, warm in winter-due to its hydrophilic yet low-conductivity structure. Typical weaves include plain habotai, twill duchesse satin, and jacquard damask, ranging from 20 g m² chiffon to 300 g m² suiting.
Applications span couture gowns, neckties, lingerie, parachutes, surgical Sutures, and high-end bedding. Care requires gentle pH-neutral laundering or dry cleaning to preserve sericin-depleted fibers.
